Being in Canada, photographing the contrast between mountains and sea has been a continual source of appreciation. Here, the sky offered the most dramatic view of this small island, Entrance Island.

  • Entrance Island is the first point of entry when heading to Nanaimo, home to a solitary lighthouse and a handful of working residences. From Gabriola Island, where I stood to take this photograph, the scene reads as both peaceful and storm-ready — low light and brooding skies suggest seas that can turn quickly. Built in 1970, Entrance Island lighthouse has long been a crucial waypoint for maritime transfers, guiding vessels through the channel and anchoring a small community whose rhythm follows tide and weather.
